In the ancient Greek world, a household provided shelter, protection and security even though not everyone had the same rights.

Children enjoyed a far more privileged position than the slaves who toiled hard so the house would function. The slaves were at the mercy of their master.

Sometimes, the father of the house would choose to adopt a slave into the family. That slave would then have the full legal rights as a son or a daughter of that family. In fact, in that time, they had more legal rights than the biological children.

‘God sent him to buy freedom for us who were slaves to the law, so that he could adopt us as his very own children. And because we are his children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, prompting us to call out, “Abba, Father.” Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since you are his child, God has made you his heir’. (Galatians 4:5-7, NLT)

God sent His Son knowing all our faults and short comings. When we are adopted into His family, we have the Spirit of His Son and an inheritance that is beyond our wildest dreams.

As a follower of Jesus you are not only adopted, but you have the Spirit of God’s own Son, close relationship to the Father and and inheritance that cannot be matched.

What a family!
